IDM RECEIVES NEW STUDENTS

The Institute of Development Management (IDM) ushered in the dawn of an exciting new era last week, holding special orientation ceremonies for the latest intake of students at its Gaborone and Francistown campuses.
The well-attended ceremonies, held on 7th and 9th August 2024 respectivey, were designed to help the students transition smoothly into a new academic environment, while ensuring they are well informed about life in IDM.
 
Giving the Welcome Remarks, Francistown Campus Manager, Elijah Moakofhi explained they hold the event every year to make students campus' life exciting, welcoming and relevant to their social and educational lifestyle.IDM was established in 1974 by the governments of Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini This year 2024, marks the 50th year of the existence of IDM,” revealed Moakofhi proudly.Addressing new students Mr Moakofhi said they should not only embrace this newly found freedom,but should also realise the need for self-management and time management to ensure they succeed in their studies.
For his part, IDM Country Director,Dr Theophilus Mooko encouraged students to be purposeful in crafting their future and also to establish their true desire and move deliberately towards it. “Be true to yourself; do not attempt to be a carbon copy of anyone else. You need to know your academic success is going to being influenced by your behavior as a learner. Do not abuse your body, find time to rest, it is not a sin to find a time to rest and you also need emotional maturity to be able to cope with independent life away from home,”advised Dr Mooko.
 
Similarly, the Acting Assistant Director Academic and Learner Support, Chris Moiketsi applauded the students for choosing IDM as their final destination and promised them that excellence is on their side. Different stakeholders educated the students on: health talks, health screenings and financial wellness, while Botswana Police deliberated on Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Substance Abuse, a topical issue that the current generation is struggling with.From the Department of Criminal Investigations and Narcotics, Masego Modibedi indicated they are disturbed by a drug called methcathinone, commonly known as CAT. She urged the students to stay away from drugs as it has the potential to ruin their education and could lead to them being expelled from school, destroying their chances of a good future.
