their vision with them.
It was also aimed at giving the staff an opportunity to draw inspiration from the Board.
The dinner meeting was held at the Grand Palm and was attended by almost
all the members of the Regional Board.

who started by introducing all the members of the Board.

IDM LANCHES DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION MANAGEMENT
Historical Background
The Institute of Development Management (IDM), in collaboration with
the Ministry of Education, recently launched the Diploma in Educational
Management and Administration (DEMA). The programme has been designed
to develop the managerial capacity of primary school principals.
The first group of 30 head teachers have now commenced this demanding programme.
The programme, which is based at IDM’s Botswana Campus was launched
by Mr Archie Makgothi, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry
of Education and Skills Development.
Giving the background of the programme, course director Gilbert Sechele
said this programme was a result of a survey conducted by IDM.
"The survey revealed the challenges faced by Heads of Schools and their
management teams. One of the challenges was that many Heads of Schools find
themselves leading teachers who have diploma and degree qualifications when
they themselves have only a Primary Teachers Certificate ( PTC )," he said.
He indicated that the result of the survey showed that head teachers wanted
to be sent for further studies in educational management and leadership
to enable them to be more effective managers. The course director also
briefed the participants about the course learning objectives,
course outlines and course structure.
Before Sechele, the Country Business Manager Mrs Faith Tombale had welcomed
both the dignitaries and the participants at IDM.
She highlighted the institution’s excitement to offer such a programme.
She also briefed the participants on the general environment and learning
facilities at IDM.
The deputy director of the Teaching Services Management (TSM) Mr Rabana
briefed the participants on sponsorship issues around the programme.
When officially launching the DEMA, Mr Makgothi highlighted the need for
education amongst the head teachers . He specifically mentioned the need of
combining experience and education in school’s administration.
In offering a vote of thanks to the dignitaries, IDM Botswana’s Head of
Programmes, Brian Goulden, said that participants’ focus should now be on
the benefits to be gained from the learning opportunities available during
the course. He told the participants that the course director and the IDM
faculty is dedicated to supporting their learning and he was looking forward

to go up North hence they got the family through
the Mahalapye Community Development Department.

IDM PUBLIC HEALTH TEAM’S INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

IDM Botswana and the University of Indiana, Bloomington. Soon after the January
2008 signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration between the two institutions,

arrived in Gaborone to begin a four-months internship with the IDM Public
Health Team. Dawn worked closely with the team members and was supervised
by Tebatso Paul, who in collaboration with Professor Rex Stockton at
Indiana, had led the original efforts to forge a link between Indiana and IDM.
During her time in IDM Dawn worked on a number of programmes including the SMDP
Informatics Project, aimed at analyzing the barriers and benefits and utilizing
the SMDP Project Tracking Database for International Programs. Upon completion,
Dawn hopes to train and create a training outline for stakeholders to utilize this program.
She also assisted staff who facilitate the M&E of HIV/AIDS Programs training.
She actively facilitated program topics and collaboration with participants
during group work. This experience is very meaningful to Dawn as it increases
her knowledge and skills in M&E.
In addition, Dawn initiated research activity on the HIV/AIDS Survey amongst
Counsellors trained at IDM. She completed a literature review and details of
the demographic information for the survey. The draft survey is being
finalized by the team at Indiana University and will then be reviewed by staff
at IDM and then the usual procedures for conducting research will be followed
including authorization from IDM Management, stakeholders like ministries concerned
and the Health Research Development Committee (HRDC), an ethics committee at MOH.
Commenting on the collaboration, Brian Goulden, IDM’s Head of Programmes in Botswana
said, "The keeness of University of Indiana to collaborate with IDM Botswana
shows the high international regard in which our Public Health Team is held. We expect
that the experience gained by both parties in this initial joint activity will be built
