Food Security

Project Management for Food Security and Poverty Reduction


The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Sector Development Unit (FANR) of the SADC has recently embarked on the implementation of a training programme entitled, Project Management for Food Security and Poverty Reduction.
The implementation of this project has been entrusted to the Institute of Development Management, with an office at the IDM Campus in Gaborone, Botswana.
The main tangible outcome of the project is the development
of a full package of project management materials,
for use in the SADC region.

Objectives

Overall Objective:

To strengthen the capacity of the SADC countries to design, appraise, implement and evaluate projects, aiming at food insecurity and poverty reduction at the local level.

Specific Objectives:

  • Promote and support national and sub-national training activities to improve skills and expertise in project management for poverty reduction in all sectors;
  • Encourage the use of high quality, state-of-the- art, participatory training materials on project management for poverty reduction by national and sub-national training organisations;
  • Establish a small core of trainers in each member state that are skilled and experienced in the use of the training materials.

Main Activities of the Project

Preparation Phase
  • This is a planning and review period in which other relevant activities and training materials will be reviewed and key actors in each member state identified;
Training Needs Workshop
  • The workshop brought together experts in project management for poverty reduction to review needs and identify priorities
Materials Preparation
  • Based on the needs identified, training modules will be designed and subjected to quality review
Training of Trainers Workshop
  • One or Two trainers from each of the member states will be trained in the use of the modules
  • Invitation to the Training of Trainers (TOT) on Project Management for Food Security and Poverty Reduction
  • Application to the TOT
Follow-up
  • This will involve monitoring and evaluating how the modules have been used.
